Discipleship isn’t a single event or a mission. It’s a continual process - a way of living. It is the goal of Northwood to follow Christ’s example of creating disciples who are equipped and expected to be Christ’s representative to a world in need of His mercy and love. Northwood Life is the language and model that we use to talk about the discipleship process.
The foundational element of discipleship is Life Connections. It is in the context of relationships with people that we are able to speak the truth of Scripture into their lives just as they need it. Some of our ministries are just a connection point. They exist to build relationships that begin the process of discipleship. These Life Connection functions are where encouragement, support, and long-term friendships are formed.
Relationship is the starting point, but becoming more like Christ often requires learning at a deeper and faster level than can be done in a strictly relational environment. Life Equipping functions are more content driven than relationship driven. They provide the tools necessary for life together. Life Equipping helps to accelerate the teaching and learning aspects of discipleship.
Life Transitions is where faith and equipping become actions. This is the service aspect of discipleship. It is at this point that one is active in the community at large to be a part of Jesus’ ministry to reconcile people to him.
The Missional Life is a change to the discipleship process. It’s not a step or an activity but a change of perspective as a result of the first three parts. Experiencing a Missional Life is when we begin to see God as in control of every aspect of life and every avenue of life as a place to be on mission for God.
The Worshipful Life is a life that is characterized by a love and adoration for Christ. This changes everything. Service isn’t an obligation it flows from a deep love for God and a desire to please him. This is place where God intended for us to live - fully captivated by him.
